Darjeeling (aka Abby in her foster home) is a Great Dane, approximately 7 years old. She had been bred until she couldn’t be bred any more, and was then dumped; She was reported as having been “found in a field.” When we met her, it was love at first sight. She had masses on her body and open sores, but she was still so sweet and loving. We knew we had to get her out because she deserved a second chance at a good life. We pulled her from the shelter on June 19th.
After we pulled her, she was examined by a vet and found to have extensive heart worm. The vet gave her only a 50/50 chance of surviving treatment, and wanted to give her time to stabilize before beginning more aggressive treatment. She was put on meds for 10 days when Darjeeling’s foster called to say she thought that Darjeeling might be pregnant.
The next day (Wednesday, July 3rd), we took her to the vet who confirmed that she was, in fact, pregnant. One day later (Thursday, July 4th), she delivered her first puppy. Over the next few days, she delivered a total of 8 puppies, who all look just like mom. At this time, mom and pups are all doing well.
Darjeeling will still need treatment for her heart worm, but the vet is waiting to proceed at this time. You can purchase from Darjeeling’s Wish List, or contribute financially to help cover the cost of her treatment and medical bills.
